“21 Jump Street” thrilled me to itsy-bitsy elated pieces. The Reagan-era TV series that inspired this inspired comedy was serious about its laughable premise. A team of young-looking police officers went undercover as high school students to investigate youth-related crimes.

In the revival, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum play high school antagonists turned police academy grads who find themselves thrown together in an identical back-to-school operation. Their captain (Nick Offerman of NBC’s “Parks and Recreation”) explains the program was revived because “the people who think these things up have no creativity or imagination. All they do now is recycle (stuff) from the past and expect us not to notice.”

Recognizing the shamelessness of its own premise and holding it up to ridicule is one of the reasons this is a model spoof. There are plenty of old jokes and stock situations in the script, but the movie hits them from new angles with a gusto that’s downright startling. Even when the material isn’t fresh, it’s spun in ways that catch us off-guard. Thrills, farce, flashes of genuine emotion — this movie really knows how to party.

Trip to the ‘Cabin’ produces snarky scares

The meta-horror genre sprang up in the mid-1990s, with movies like “Wes Craven’s New Nightmare” (1994) and “Scream” (1996) — witty commentaries that self-consciously invoked the tired tropes of other horror movies in the pursuit of a whole new set of scares. Yet the trend didn’t last for long because, as myriad “Scream” sequels proved, finding that balance between terror and satire isn’t as easy as it looks.

Credit then to first-time director Drew Goddard, and his co-screenwriter Joss Whedon (the creator of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), who have at least tried to bring a moribund genre back to life. “The Cabin in the Woods” sends five prototypical horror flick college kids — the jock, the sensitive stud, the nerd, the brainy beauty and the bimbo — on a weekend getaway, to a cabin that looks lifted wholesale off the set of Sam Raimi’s original “The Evil Dead” (1981). Before long, they find themselves drawn into the basement, where deadly supernatural forces await to be released.

What these young people don’t know is that, in some remote, unexplained location, a group of technicians — led by oddballs Sitterson (Richard Jenkins) and Hadley (Bradley Whitford) — are watching their every move on camera and manipulating their surroundings. The set-up is witty and intriguing — is this some sort of “Truman Show”-style reality competition? — but the balance of “The Cabin in the Woods” feels off.

That’s the Poe of “The Raven,” a fanciful, witty and suspenseful revision of Poe’s last days that is more entertaining than it has any right to be.

Poe wore his hair a little long, and a mustache. But John Cusack gives America’s first great suffering artist an intellectual’s (or pseudo-intellectual’s) goatee, a cape and a lot of swagger, a cross between Lord Byron and Sherlock Holmes.
