Jodie Meeks scored a game high of 37 points along with six rebounds and four steals to lead Kentucky over Kansas State 74-72 in the third round of the Las Vegas Invitational Friday night. Meeks outscored Kansas State (5-1) by himself in the first half, 24-23. For the game, he went 11-of-17 from the field, 11-of-13 from the free-throw line for Kentucky (3-2), which next plays West Virginia in the championship game Saturday night.

NV man survives 36-hour ordeal in crashed Jeep
A Nevada man was counting his blessings after surviving a 36-hour ordeal trapped in his crashed Jeep in the frigid Sierra Nevada. Edward Duncan, 65, was released Saturday from a Reno hospital, where he was treated for three broken ribs and a broken wrist after being found amid the wreckage Thursday.

Nevada education officials are preparing to set a uniform standard for high school students who take tests to earn credits. Officials say under the new bar 70 percent would be the passing grade that allows students to forgo a full course of instruction and receive credit.

Reno police urge victims to speak out
Reno police said they’re making a renewed push to find more women who might be linked to a former Marine arrested in the slaying of a 19-year-old college student and the abduction and rape of another college student. James Michael Biela, 27, of Sparks, was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Washoe County Jail on suspicion of murdering Brianna Denison early this year. He’s also charged with the kidnapping and sexual assault of another woman in Reno last December.

David DuBois had a team-high 18 points, including a layup with 0.9 seconds left to lead Western Illinois to a 62-60 victory against Texas-Pan American at the Global Sports Classic on Saturday. Family members say ‘Buffalo Jim’ death not settled
Family members of James “Buffalo Jim” Barrier say they believe the colorful mechanic and wrestling promoter was murdered and have asked police to exhume Barrier’s body to prove it. Barrier’s daughter Jennifer Barrier on Friday told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the family is requesting Las Vegas police conduct further tests on her father’s body to determine drug use.
