Eccentric characters drive ‘Parasomnia’
You remember in “Jerry Maguire” when Renee Zellweger said to Tom Cruise: “You had me at hello”? Well, this DVD had me at its title — ” Parasomnia.” It’s a thriller about a woman (Cerilyn Wilson) suffering from a medical condition that has her in an almost constant dream state, waking briefly on rare occasions. Meanwhile, an imprisoned psychotic serial killer (Patrick Kilpatrick) has become obsessed with her and is attempting to take over her mind. A young art student (Dylan Purcell) has fallen for the sleeping beauty and faces all kinds of horrors trying to save her from the killer.
It’s a good horror film, more reliant upon eccentric characters and strange situations than most of its ilk, although it still earns its R rating. It lists for $24.98 for either DVD or Blu-ray.
Another fine thriller out this week is ” Girl by the Lake,” based on mystery writer Karin Fossum’s novel “Don’t Look Back.” The plot is set in motion when a 6-year-old girl who had disappeared returns to her Italian village in the Alps with a story of her weird abductor and the dead body of a woman she saw by the lake. The film is in Italian, with English subtitles. It’s not rated and lists for $24.98.
