Romance a lost cause in the listless ‘Love Happens’
“Love Happens” is a comedy in mourning, a romance so sad that even Jennifer Aniston at her most engaging can’t save it.
The writer of the deadly “Dragonfly” has been promoted to writer-director for this one, and despite having the same template as a hundred screen romances, he can’t make it work.
Aaron Eckhart is Burke Ryan, the prototypical lonely man in need of love. He’s a motivational speaker, a guy getting rich running self-help get-over-grief seminars. His hook, the one he cashed in on with his best-seller, “A-Okay,” is simple —”My wife died.”

‘Meatballs’ smart, biting
“Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” is the latest unexpected delight from Sony Pictures Animation, the folks who gave us “Monster House” and “Surf’s Up.” A delicious farce and a backhanded slap at America the Obese, it may be the funniest animated film of the year.
Based on the popular children’s book by Judi and Ron Barrett, “Meatballs” is about fathers and sons, daring to be smart and the price of gluttony.
Bill Hader, a voice-acting natural, is Flint Lockwood, the kid who “wants to be smart. But that’s lame.” So the other kids told him. He’s grown up to be the resident screwball inventor of the tiny island town of Swallow Falls. His spray-on shoes and hybrid “rat-birds” are a bust. But he needs to come up with something since this sardine capital fell on hard times once the world figured out what sardines taste like.

Tyler Perry has another No. 1 hit
LOS ANGELES — Being bad is good for Tyler Perry, whose latest movie, “I Can Do Bad All By Myself,” opened at the top of the box office this weekend with more than $24 million.
The Lionsgate comedy stars Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson (”The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) as a hard-drinking nightclub singer forced to care for her delinquent niece and nephews. Besides directing and writing the film, based on his stage play of the same name, Perry co-stars as his brash, cross-dressing alter ego, Madea.
It’s Perry’s second film this year to open at No. 1. In February, “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” debuted at the top spot with $41 million, which stands as the biggest opening of his eight films.

Exploring love is at center of flat ‘Paper Heart’
“Paper Heart” is neither real nor fake. It looks like a documentary, but isn’t — exactly.
So it’s a bit hard to process “Paper Heart,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year in the dramatic competition (and won the award for best screenplay, written by star Charlyne Yi and director Nicholas Jasenovec). The film combines “real” footage with narrative scenes, though it’s all supposed to look spontaneous. Instead, it feels stilted.
The film does have its sweet and charming moments, but its approach ultimately distracts from its intentions, which become muddled.
