Movie Review: ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’ a comfortable, imperfect fit

“He’s Just Not That Into You” offers more than just a tour of the ways women delude themselves in relation to men.

It also shows how men delude themselves in relation to women and how women encourage other women to do dumb things, mostly out of friendship and optimism.

Perhaps the most welcome quality of ” Not That Into You,” based on the nonfiction best-seller by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo (in turn based on a “Sex and the City” episode) is its lack of nastiness. Women have been treated far worse in romantic comedies with comparatively innocuous titles.

The script by Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, though comically exaggerated, still gets a lot of real-life details right, such as the way female friends comfort each other when a man doesn’t call. “He’s probably intimidated by you,” for example, is both poppycock and an effective self-esteem booster.

Indeed, “Not That Into You,” an insightful, funny film loaded with appealing actors, engages so thoroughly for stretches that it’s a shame when it grows too contrived and then too long. No one’s so into a romantic comedy that she or he wants it to last more than two hours.

Mostly, though, “Not That Into You” flows well given its multiple story lines and a main cast so large that it includes two Jennifers and a Ginnifer and a Connolly as well as a Connelly.

Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly and Ginnifer Goodwin (HBO’s “Big Love”) play co-workers at what might be a magazine. It’s hard to tell, because in classic romantic-comedy fashion, most of what these women do at work is gab about men while wearing cute clothes.

Aniston and Connelly’s characters serve as romantic advisers to Goodwin’s character, Gigi, a clinger who checks her voice mail obsessively every time she gives her number to some random bozo in a bar. Ensconced in long-term relationships, Gigi’s co-workers offer advice from the other, supposedly more stable side of the relationship fence.

If this heavily populated film has a lead character, it’s Gigi, who scares off men with her fervor and neediness. The role doesn’t seem difficult to play until you consider that Goodwin, a real beauty, has convinced us Gigi can repel a man within minutes of meeting him.

Connelly gives the film’s most accomplished performance, bringing gravity as well as an endearing awkwardness to a woman whose domestic life is crumbling as her kitchen gets renovated. It’s refreshing to see this modern tragedian take a few stabs at comedy. While she’s no Carole Lombard, Connelly is so committed to everything she does that she wins points anyway.

Aniston’s role as the longtime girlfriend of a man (Ben Affleck) who loves her but doesn’t believe in marriage also entails more drama than comedy. And that’s too bad, especially on the heels of her mostly serious role in “Marley & Me.” Though Aniston is deft with drama, she’s expert at comedy.

But Aniston does engage in some nice, possibly improvised interplay with Affleck. The actors appear so relaxed together that they might have come off as a comfy old pair of shoes were Affleck not looking so gaunt here. It’s as if he prepared for the film via Matt Damon’s “Courage Under Fire” diet.

Not every female character frets over the men in her life. A yoga instructor played by Scarlett Johansson blithely strings along a nice fellow (Kevin Connolly, as solidly regular-guy as he is on HBO’s “Entourage”) while pursuing a married man (Bradley Cooper).

The extramarital flirtation compels not so much in how it’s acted – Johansson possesses femme-fatale looks but lacks the attendant oomph – as in the way the participants constantly discuss the situation. The fits and starts of the story line ring true.

So do many of the observations made by the skirt-chasing bartender (Justin Long) who offers Gigi insight into the male mind. Perhaps best known as the guy from the Mac television ads, Long surprisingly doesn’t need to stretch much to play a lady-killer. After all, it’s all in the attitude. In the bartender’s charming but distant manner we see what hooks women and inspires them to read things into his behavior that aren’t there.

Drew Barrymore, who produced the film, plays the comparatively minor role of a woman frustrated by dating via technological devices. Popping up occasionally to say “MySpace” or “iChat” before disappearing again, Barrymore can’t be accused of making the film as a star vehicle for herself.

The film’s predictable final act nearly squanders the good will it had engendered. That a star-filled romantic comedy based on a pop best-seller adheres to convention doesn’t surprise, but the filmmakers go too far by forcing two of the most pathological characters together. It’s a glaringly unconvincing ending to a film purporting to give us the straight dope.

• “I Love You Man” is a comedy that explores the surprisingly complex relationship between two straight men (Paul Rudd and Jason Segel) who become emotionally invested best friends. Rashida Jones (from TV’s “The Office”) is the fiance who gets left on the sidelines.

• And alternative screenings this week include the Palace West’s Cult Film Series screenings of “Top Gun” this weekend and the Timeless Classics Series offering of “Amadeus: The Director’s Cut” on Wednesday.
